Clayton Castle (MPA 2024) has been crushing it as Communications Manager for the City of Middletown, Ohio! Most recently, Clayton started "The Middletown NOW Podcast," and he did a live show with hometown hero Kayla Harrison, who's won two Olympic gold medals in judo and a UFC championship for mixed martial arts.

In a social media post about the live podcast, Clayton said, "[T]his night wasn’t for me or for the city government. This night was for the residents of Middletown. I hope we made the city proud."

As some of you may recall, Clayton worked as a Public Relations Specialist at Northern Kentucky University for a couple years, while he pursued his MPA degree. During that time, he created, produced, edited, and co-hosted “The Norse Up Podcast."

These photos of the live podcast were taken by Larry Mulligan (Southpaw Studio in Middletown) and shared by Clayton in his social media post. In addition, the Enquirer - Cincinnati and Kentucky attended the event and took some photos, which you can check out here

Jim Flick (MPA 2010) is teaching our Budgeting Techniques and Applications class again this semester. Among other relevant experiences, Jim is a regular contributor to PA Times magazine, which shares "concise and insightful articles written by fellow practitioners, academicians, government officials and the next generation of public servants." It's an official publication of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) National.

Jim's most recent article in PA Times is titled "Embracing Process Improvement in Local Government," and it discusses the importance of engaging employees and measuring outcomes. "The employees who perform the work daily are in the best position to identify areas for change and often have creative solutions for implementing them," he writes. "Success in process improvement is not a vague sense that things 'feel better.' It’s the ability to demonstrate, with data, that services are more accessible, decisions are made faster and outcomes are more equitable." You can read the full article here

In addition to serving as an NKU MPA adjunct professor and PA Times contributor, Jim is Senior Consultant with Raftelis, which is a management consulting firm for local governments and public utilities. Prior to that, he held management positions in Deerfield Township and in the City of Cincinnati. Currently, he is serving as President of the American Society for Public Administration's Greater Cincinnati Chapter (ASPA GCC).

Lisa Desmarais (MPA 2012)

Lisa Desmarais (MPA 2012) is serving as the professor for Foundations of Public Service this Fall, after successfully serving in this capacity for other classes such as Fund Raising & Management (recently renamed!) and Grant Research, Writing & Management. Our students love that she brings lots of real-world experience from the public, nonprofit, and private sectors.

Among other roles, Lisa has served as Board Chair of the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS), which has 16 colleges across the state with 70+ campuses and 97,000 students. Also, she held leadership positions in local government, including Director of Technology Services in Kenton County and Director of Finance and Operations in the City of Covington. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Northern Kentucky University Foundation and was recently recognized for her "lifetime achievement" with an Outstanding Women of Northern Kentucky Award.

Lisa is serving in another role that's very relevant to our Foundations of Public Service class -- as a member of the City of Covington's Committee on Form of Government Transition. The committee was created this year to guide the city in implementing the transition from a City Manager to a Mayor-Council form of government to take effect in early 2027. The committee consists of nine voting members, including the Mayor who serves as Chairperson, along with other city officials, city employees, and citizens.
