NKU Launches STEM at Home to Support Online Learning

April 10, 2020—  Northern Kentucky University’s Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM) offers a new home learning program to help kids learn STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects at home.

CINSAM’s STEM at Home kicked off this week with kids from six Greater Cincinnati school districts investigating Busy Beaver Engineering. The new learning program emphasizes educational and scientific development through hands-on learning projects, live video lessons with CINSAM’s team and interactive discussions.

“We understand that social distancing has challenged our lives in many ways. Students can’t go to school and interact with their teachers, classmates or have the classroom resources for STEM learning,” said Dr. Madhura Kulkarni, CINSAM Director. “Keeping students engaged in hands-on, minds-on learning is crucial during this unprecedented time. We are bringing fun, interactive learning opportunities to their homes and backyards.”

CINSAM invites students from kindergarten to eighth grade to explore new topics each week through May. STEM at Home topics include:

April 15 | Float Your Boat

April 22 | Eggology (All about the incredible, edible, egg)

April 29 | Cookie Mining

May 6 | Wriggle and Squiggle: Earthworms are Fun

May 13 | Swish, Swish, SPIT: Gatorade DNA Extraction

Local STEM teachers are also encouraged to join the Teachers’ Coffee Break every Friday. CINSAM’s Ella Bowling and Amber Carter will share valuable and useful STEM resources for adjusting to virtual instruction. Both programs are free to students and teachers through the Duke Energy Foundation’s support.

“As this pandemic spreads in our local communities, flexibility is crucial as non-profits scramble to adjust their community programs and services,” said Kim Vogelgesang, Duke Energy’s Stakeholder Engagement Manager. “We are working with our partners to provide them the freedom to ensure the demand for their services is met, not only for today’s response, but for the viability of our communities as we recover and rebuild.“
